Lord fires four as Spalding Water Polo claim victory over Hatfield in season opener

Spalding Water Polo got their Herts League season off to a winning start by defeating Hatfield 11-9 at the Castle Sports Complex pool last week.

Hosts Spalding took control in the first quarter, with goals from Gareth Lord (2), John James and Ed Martin to lead 4-2.

Hatfield then scored three in the second quarter to Spalding’s two, making the score 6-5 at half time.

The home goals came from James and Tom Marsters.

The third quarter was a scrappy eight minutes, with both teams scoring well but neither taking charge.

Spalding’s four goals came from new club captain Phil James (2), Lord and Martin to put them 10-8 to the good.

The final quarter showcased end-to-end play with only one goal apiece.

Spalding’s goalscorer was Lord, making it four in total for the match, as his side won 11-9.
