LETTER: Second chance for SHDC to use that £2.7m wisely

The proposed revamp of the Priory Road offices has been triggered by the central government selling off assets such as Job Centres because most of their work is now done online.

Perhaps it is also an admission of how few claimants actually find work via them? This does not justify a £2.7million spend.

When the last Labour government introduced the green energy scheme with its large feed-in tariffs, the idea was that local authorities could provide, initially, council tenants with solar panels and extending installation at a fair price to other households to lift people out of fuel poverty, providing extra disposable income for both households and the council. I put this to SHDC at the time.

Of course a change of government resulted in capitalist speculators getting permission for vast solar farms making a large profit for the few.

We are fortunate in having a second chance to improve everyone in SHDC area, including the council by using this £2.7m to roll out a solar household scheme now.
This would seem to be an improvement on SHDC’s claim to have achieved its goal by fitting thermostats to a just a few households.
If done, it may even influence voters’ decisions on the unitary authority.

Come on SHDC, look after your residents. As the PM keeps saying – govern for the many, not just the few.
