Pinchbeck United player/boss Ian Dunn is hoping his side’s best display of the season so far can be the catalyst to a surge up the Peterborough League Premier Division table.
Dunn’s charges booked their place in the quarter-finals of the President’s Shield with an emphatic 4-1 away win at Stilton on Saturday.
They are on their travels again this weekend when they visit Peterborough ICA Sports in the league and Dunn wants to build on last Saturday’s success as his side bid to make up ground on the teams above them.
Pinchbeck currently trail early pacesetters Moulton Harrox by 11 points, having played two fewer games.
Dunn said: “We played really well on Saturday and I couldn’t fault any of the lads for their performance.
“We played constant attacking football, but were also prepared to go back and start again if we needed to.
“It was the best football we have played all season and everyone worked really hard for each other.
“It could have been a bit of a rugby score if we’d taken all our chances but, at the end of the day, we are just pleased to be in the hat for the next round. Hopefully this performance will help get our league form going because we need to start picking up some victories.”
Pinchbeck went into Saturday’s Shield clash without suspended frontman Tony Edwards, winger Liam Ogden and centre-back Tom Brooks.
They have also recently lost the services of defender Ash Murrell who has gone travelling.
But they were quickly out of the blocks with Ryan Leggett bringing a fine save out of the home keeper after just 15 seconds.
Leggett then broke the deadlock after 13 minutes before Ollie Maltby scored the first of a two-goal haul.
Tom Panton increased Pinchbeck’s lead within seconds of the start of the second half with Maltby adding his second and the visitors’ fourth on the hour mark from the penalty spot after Callum Lawe had been fouled.
Scott Allen scored Stilton’s consolation on one of their few raids on the Pinchbeck goal.
Dunn added: “That was my only gripe – they scored from the only shot they had while we must have created 21 chances and scored four.
“It was pleasing to get the win though, especially without a few of our influential players.”
