Opposition to takeaway plan for former Welec shop in Spalding

A planning application to allow the former Welec shop in Spalding to become a takeaway is opposed by Spalding and District Civic Society.

Welec, in New Road, closed last Saturday (January 16) following the retirement of business owners John and Jean Wellband.

Premises landlord, The Trustees of the Frances Blane Settlement, has applied to South Holland District Council for permission for change of use of the ground floor from class A1 (retail) to class A5 (takeaway).
It says it wants to establish whether the principle of a takeaway in that location would be acceptable.

The civic society said: “We feel that the area is already saturated with takeaways and other late-night eating opportunities. We also object to the emerging planning policy on gaps in retail frontage, especially with the proposed bricking-up of a window.”
