Test veteran to give Oslo speech

Nuclear weapons test veteran Douglas Hern has been invited to give a talk to Amnesty International in Oslo.

Douglas, who lives in Moulton, will fly out to Norway in the spring where he will speak at the charity’s International Council Meeting (ICM).

Ex-Royal Navy cook Douglas flew to Christmas Island off the coast of Australia on his 21st birthday in 1957. In the 12 months he was there he witnessed five major weapons tests including hydrogen bombs Grapple X and Z.

As a member of the Boston and South Lincs Merchant Navy Association, Douglas is helping to research whether others, including the crews of merchant ships supplying Christmas Island, have been affected by the weapons tests.
