COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS COLUMN: How to keep kids active this winter

Jess Horn webby Jess Horn (community development officer at South Holland District Council)

Keeping children active over the cooler months can be a tricky task. Fortunately there are lots of great activities available to help you out.

One way you can help your children become more active is to sign up to the 10 Minute Shake Up.
The campaign uses popular Disney characters alongside familiar Change4Life animations to get children doing more ten-minute bursts of exercise.

The aim is to help them reach the recommended 60 minutes or more of physical activity they need each day.
The activities are games which can be played individually, in pairs or groups.

When they sign up to the 10 minute Shake up they will also receive a 10 Minute Shake up team wristband with timer, a Disney team poster and sticker, 10 Minute Shake Up activity cards, wild cards and a very special team move to practice!

The 10 minute Shake Up is completely free and you can sign up here.

The Get Going pages on the Change4life website also have some great free activity ideas including weekly activity planners which can help you fit activity into your daily routine, the fun generator app which has more than 100 different fun activities to try and the sports and hobbies pages which have lots of great information, videos and activities like dance moves and steps. You can find them all for free here.

Finally, the Fit Kids programme has a free 12-week course starting in January. The sessions include fitness and nutrition activities, some of this course’s sessions will be held at the Fun Farm in Weston.
Fit Kids is for children aged 4-11 and aims to encourage them to become more active and teach them about how to make healthy diet choices.

There are lots of other activities and opportunities available online and locally. Please contact the Community Development Team on 01775 761161 or [email protected] for more information.
