Newman double not enough as Spalding United lose FA Trophy cracker

Two more goals from new signing Jake Newman couldn’t stop Spalding United losing a nine-goal FA Trophy thriller at Newcastle Town on Saturday.

In perhaps the game of the day in the Preliminary Round, Mitch Griffiths also scored for Spalding in a remarkable 5-4 defeat in the all Evo-Stik League First Division South clash in Staffordshire.

Indeed, the Tulips led 1-0 and 2-1 early on after strikes from Griffiths (2) and Josh Moreman (10), but Newcastle hit back to level twice through Nev Thompson (4)  and Tim Sanders (15).

The hosts then went ahead for the first time through Thompson’s second – and then added a fourth just before half time thanks to Marc Grocott.

Newman’s first, a header in off the post, made it 4-3 early in the second period. But Omar Haughton bagged Newcastle’s fifth soon after to restore their two-goal cushion.

Striker Newman scored again with ten minutes left to make it three goals in two games since joining from Wellingborough Town, but the hosts held on to book a date with Kidsgrove Athletic in the next round.

Elsewhere, Holbeach United cruised to a 4-1 ChromaSport UCL Knockout Cup win over Bugbrooke St Michaels at Carter’s Park. Josh Ford (3) and Andrew Tidswell got the goals (click here for the full report).

In the ChromaSport Peterborough League, Moulton Harrox made it eight wins from as many Premier Division matches with a 3-0 victory over Ketton at Broad Lane.

Ben Allen, Tom Cardell and Joe Townsend netted at Broad Lane to keep Harrox two points clear at the top.

Holbeach United Reserves remain third, just three points behind Harrox, after an 8-2 win at Riverside. Tom Gosling helped himself to a hat-trick for Omar Joof’s side.

Crowland Town, meanwhile, remain bottom after a 7-2 defeat at Netherton United.

In Division One, Matty Cawthorn fired four goals – including three headers – as Long Sutton Athletic thrashed Oundle Town 6-2 at London Road.

Also on winning form were Spalding United Reserves, who beat Netherton Reserves 4-0 at the Sir Halley to go third.

Ashley Wilson (2), Matt Rose and Jonathan Lockie scored for the Tulips.

Elsewhere, Sutton Bridge United bounced back from last week’s loss to win 3-2 at Wittering and Moulton Harrox Reserves drew 0-0 at Baston.
