Tydd St Mary climb up to fourth with impressive Sports success

In-form Tydd St Mary made it three wins on the spin with a 3-2 victory at Stanground Sports on Saturday.

The first half of the ChromaSport Peterborough League Division was goalless, although Tydd keeper Martin Cherry did have to pull off a top stop.

Playing some good football at the start of the second period, the Saints got their reward when Stu Easey’s free kick was parried into the path of Tim Lowe, who tapped in.

Tydd doubled their lead on 68 minutes when a lovely Easey ball down the right wing found the pacey Lowe to expertly square for sub Scott Pemberton and rifle home.

Stanground pulled a goal back on 70 minutes with the goal of the game when Jack Minchella ghosted into the box and flicked the ball over two Tydd defender’s heads to rifle home, then Easey’s unfortunate own goal on 81 minutes made it 2-2.

The Saints could have capitulated under heavy pressure, but an excellent Pemberton through ball was met by man-of-the-match Lowe with a lobbed finish to secure a thrilling win with just four minutes remaining.

Tydd assistant manager Calvin Leuty said: “This was certainly a game of two halves and it is so satisfying to come away winners when both teams were so evenly matched. Great to see Tim Lowe getting back to scoring ways too.”

Now fourth in the standings, Tydd host Division Three leaders Thorpe Wood Rangers on Saturday (2pm).
