Trio of titles for Woadman’s Arms eases pain of league loss

Woadman’s Arms made up for missing out on the Division One title by snaffling the lion’s share of the trophies at Holbeach and District Pool League’s finals night.

Having finished as runners-up to champions Golden Lion in the top tier, Woadman’s kicked off finals night at the Anchor Inn with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Rose and Crown C in the KO Challenge Cup final.

This one was settled pretty early, with Shaun Summers, James Ball, Alan Mason and Shane Balding all winning frames to move Woadman’s 4-0 ahead.

S Parnell pulled a frame back for the Rose and Crown, only for S Woods to beat S Dawson in the following frame to secure a 5-1 success.

Next up was the Secondary Cup final between second tier side Five Bells and Division One’s Rose and Crown B.

In what was a tactical tussle, D Ray and D Gammon won early to put Five Bells 2-0 up, but S Biggs hit back to reduce the arrears.

It was soon 3-1, but J Moore and A Hutchinson produced some calculated and composed potting to level the scores at 3-3 before the doubles.

The teams of D Gammon and A Bishop and W Grant and D Hutchinson exchanged doubles wins to make it 4-4, setting up a decider.

That was won by Ian Groves from Five Bells, giving his side a 5-4 victory.

Then came the doubles final, with Woadman’s pair Balding and Ball emerging as 3-1 winners over D Philips and J Dunham (Rose and Crown C).

The highlight came in the opening frame, with Balding breaking well and clearing up.

In the singles, L Watson (Rose and Crown A) became queen of the baize in the ladies’ competition with a triumph over Jess King (Lamb and Flag C).

The night concluded with the men’s singles finale – and it was one of the quickest final in recent memory.

Woadman’s ace Mason refused to give an inch to Golden Lion’s J Reynolds in a whirlwind 3-0 win, making it three trophies for his club on the night.
