Spalding Tennis Club’s top team made it back-to-back wins in Peterborough and District Tennis League Division Two for the first time this season as they saw off NENS 5-4 last Monday night.
The ‘A’ side were represented by three players aged 15 and under in Ryan Greenaway, Jack Howard and David Dorey-Rodriguez, as they partnered Martin Perkins, Dominic Layton-Hannam and Mike Sitch respectively.
Spalding started the game well in all three rubbers, but with the rain getting worse they were forced to take a break, before moving from their preferred acrylic courts to the all weather surface.
Unfortunately, this affected Sitch and Dorey-Rodriguez, who lost 7-6 on a tie-break after holding a 6-4 lead at the change.
Fortunately, the other two pairs won their first round rubbers to give Spalding a 2-1 lead.
The remainder of the match was a very tight affair, ending under floodlights, but Spalding managed to hold on.
Spalding B, represented by Andy Rix and Steve Knight, Mick and Matthew Pearl, Howard Baxter and Rob Hodges, travelled to meet a competent Deeping side who were too strong on the night.
They lost 6-3, with each of Spalding’s pairs winning one rubber each.
Spalding C represented by George Taylor and Ray Gamble, Jamie Reeves and Carl Newall, Oscar Emanuelle and Nigel Robinson, lost 5-4 at Castor.
