Tulips and Tigers beaten in pre-season friendly openers

Both Spalding United and Holbeach United suffered 2-1 defeats in their first pre-season friendly games of the summer on Saturday.

The Tulips went down to UCL Premier Division title hopefuls Wisbech Town, while the Tigers were handed a reverse by Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Premier Division outfit Swaffham Town.

At Wisbech, last season’s leading scorer Tom Waumsley picked up where he left off with a 58th-minute opener for Pat Rayment’s side. But Wisbech replied instantly through Sam Cubberley (60), before Nick Davey (70) secured the win for the hosts.

Holbeach, meanwhile, were massively under-strength at Swaffham. There was, at least, a debut goal for new striker Josh Ford in a game played at Lynn Sport.

Both sides have friendly fixtures on Tuesday night, with Spalding visiting Oakham United (7.30pm) and the Tigers travelling to Horncastle Town (7.45pm).
