Second Spalding Voice Invitational Cup is a resounding success

The second annual Spalding Voice Invitational Cup was held on Sunday – with Chesterfield retaining the trophy.

Held at the Castle Sports Complex, the competition aims to highlight the sport and promote the Spalding and District Table Tennis League.

The day consisted of four teams taking part – hosts Spalding, Hinckley, Cambridge and Chesterfield.

All four competed against each other in a round robin style competition, with the result a showdown between Hinckley and eventual winners Chesterfield.

The final result was no surprise, as the winning side are part of a strong league which consists of a whopping 60 teams.

However, the Spalding team of John Gilbert, Richard Hammond, and Tomasz Dobrzyn all gave a creditable performance – and the standard of play throughout the day was excellent.

The day was organised by development officer Joe Beadle on behalf of the Spalding and DIstrict Table Tennis League, which meets on Wednesday evenings and is run by Nicola and Gary Wilkinson.

Beadle said: “All of the players and supporters said how much they had enjoyed the tournament and were impressed with the event and centre facilities.

“Some also expressed an interest in joining the local league.”
