People in Long Sutton have been rallying round after ‘despicable’ thieves once again targeted allotments.
Long Sutton Parish Council says it’s the third such incident in the last few months at the site it operates at Roman Gardens.
The latest incident occurred overnight on September 8-9 and saw equipment stolen.
But after a plea from the parish council, a number of tools have been donated and one company, The Antique and Jewellery Shop, has donated a diamond ring that’s to be raffled off for a new Allotment Holders Replenishment Fund.
Parish council chairman John Clarey said in his monthly column (see page 28): “This all just proves there are still very good people in Long Sutton wanting to help one another. We are looking into putting CCTV there, like we have in our parks.
“It will be done as soon as we have located a scaffold pole for the fixing of CCTV.”
Parish clerk Karen Treacher said of the incidents: “The thieves stole chainsaws, garden tools, drills, spanners and other equipment, some of it vintage, from our mainly elderly allotment holders.
“The thieves were equipped to break into the more secure sheds to steal and cause unnecessary damage and upset.
“This is the third time in as many months thieves have targeted the allotments and this time they caused lots of damage and stole tools that many tenants had owned for decades and cherished them.
“They will not be able to replace some of the more vintage items or afford new tools.
“If anyone is offered tools etc or any auction houses are offered them as lots please contact the police or Long Sutton Parish Council.
“It is despicable that these people chose to steal from such a community rather than do as our allotment holders have done and do a hard day’s work for their money, not steal and cause such distress to people.
“The council hope they are proud of their night’s work and for spoiling the feeling of safety and community of our allotment holders.”
A spokesman for Lincolnshire Police said: “it has been reported that several sheds on the Daniels Gate allotments, Long Sutton, have been broken into with damage being caused, several items have been stolen, including a chainsaw, garden equipment, tools, drills, spanners and various other items.
“If anyone does have any information that would assist our investigation, we would like to hear from them.”
