Substitutes secure Tigers opening-day points

Holbeach United got their Thurlow Nunn League season off to a flyer by beating Long Melford 3-2 at Carter’s Park.

Rabab Ali gave them the half-time lead from the spot after a foul on Pat Kacirek.

The visitors levelled before substitutes Alpha Wurie and Denis Coelho secured the points ahead of a late consolation from the Suffolk side after teenage goalkeeper Zak Lawrence had saved a penalty.

Co-manager Joe Sims was pleased with the win but felt the team had made hard work of it.

“There is plenty for us to improve but winning while not being at our best is a very good habit,” he said. “Some of our forward play was exciting, but what pleased me most was the togetherness when we had to dig deep in roasting conditions.”

Tigers: Lawrence, Bodibe, Kotloczki, West, Nicholson, Oldham, Touaiti, Hyde, Kacirek, Ali, Ibeneme. Subs: Wilkshire, Coelho, Wurie, Ahamed, Hamilton. Att: 75
