Volunteers who help keep a historic South Holland church going have been left devastated by a spate of vandalism.
The disabled toilet which is currently being built after years in planning was among the damage suffered at St John the Evangelist Church, off Broadgate in Weston Hills.
Vandals have also chipped bricks off corners of the 138-year-old building, taken drain covers, broken the water supply and dumped rubble in front of the door.
The Weston Hills Church Committee say its members have reported four incidents to the police in the last few days.
It has raised tens of thousands for the church including over £1,000 at a recent bingo event.
The group’s Linda Casson, said: “It’s devastating seeing this vandalism having raised so much money.
“It’s sad a building like this has been targeted.”
Churchwarden Christine Woolsey grew up around the church which was consecrated in 1888, and has been involved with it for most of her 81 years.
“We work very hard for the people of the village to keep the building in good condition and on the whole they are very supportive.
“People who have never been here before are amazed when they see inside.
“It’s only recently we’ve been able to put all new electrics in.”
South Holland District Council member Anthony Casson said he was ‘disgusted’ with the vandalism.
“The disabled toilets has been a project ten years in the making, and is being done by a volunteer,” he said.
“The vandals have broken into the door and damaged the roof beams he’s put up.”
A spokesman for Lincolnshire Police, said: “The damage happened on July 12 with a further report on the 18th.
“We would ask the local community to let us know if they have seen anyone or anything they believe may be related. It is a real concern when historic buildings are damaged in this way. The local team will put in extra patrols in the area and we have asked crime prevention colleagues to get in touch to see if there is anything they can help with too.”
