Larry sets up ‘friendship network’

A Spalding man has launched a new group in a bid to alleviate loneliness on some weekends.

Larry Stone moved to the area 11 months ago and is member of different groups during the week.

But now he’s set up The Spalding Community Friendship Network which is meeting on the first and third Saturdays of the month 2pm to 4pm at Project St Thomas on St Thomas’s Road.

There were 15 people at the first session, with the next on Saturday (June 6)

“It’s to build bonds, share stories and basically lift each other up,” said Larry. “I’ve lived here 11 months and my wife Maggie died in 2008.

“I don’t know anyone, so what better way than to set up a friendship group where people can come together and meet.

“You can talk about anything and make friends, and hopefully if you’re feeling a bit low then it’ll give you a lift.

“If you don’t want to talk you can listen.”

Refreshments will also be supplied for the sessions.

“I’ll be looking for funding eventually but initially I’m just doing it all myself,” continued Larry. “Everyone’s welcome and it should be a good thing for the community.”
