Alleged victim tells court of sexual abuse claim when aged under 13

A woman who alleges that she was abused by a Spalding man when she was a child has denied making up false allegations.

Barry Severn, 37, of Stonegate, Spalding, is accused of committing historic sex offences against two girls when he was a teenager.

A jury at Lincoln Crown Court heard evidence from one of the alleged victims who made a complaint to the police in July 2020.

Mr Severn has denied committing seven offences against the girl while she was aged under-13.

They include three charges of indecent assault, two counts of sexual assault, one offence of assault by penetration and one allegation of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

Mr Severn also denies two further charges of indecent assault against a second girl aged under 13.

Giving evidence in court from behind a screen, the first complainant insisted she had ‘not got together’ with the other alleged victim to make up false complaints.

Prosecutor David Eager asked the woman, who can not be named: “Are you telling the truth?”

She replied: “Yes.”

The woman also answered questions from defence barrister Barnaby Shaw who told her that Barry Severn denied any sexual touching.

Messages which were sent from the complainant to the other alleged victim were read out by Mr Shaw.

The complainant confirmed that she asked: “It happened, right?”

She also admitted stating: “Sometimes I think I made it all up.”

“It shows doubt,” the complainant explained to Mr Shaw. “But it didn’t mean I was having doubts. I just wanted validation.”

Mr Severn denies all nine charges which are alleged to have occurred between 2002 and 2009.
