Athletic stay on track for return to former glories

Long Sutton Athletic stayed on track for a step up to the Premier Division of the Peterborough League with a third consecutive away win on Saturday.

The former Eastern Counties League club continued their rise back to former glories with a 2-1 success at Netherton Reserves to move joint top of Division One with Stamford Reserves, but from two games fewer.

Jordan Keeble and Corey Compton earned Athletic a 2-0 half-time lead but the hosts pulled one back to make it five of Sutton’s last six games in all competitions being settled by the odd goal

Crowland Town Reserves remain bottom, despite giving title-chasing Ketton Sports Premiair a close run. Jake Woodward and Klyden Lleshi scored for the strugglers in their 4-2 defeat.

In the Premier Division, Crowland Town and Moulton Harrox were without a game, leaving the way open for title rivals Netherton United and Warboys Town to impress with 5-1 victories.

South Holland United stepped up the pace in the second half of their Peterborough Sunday League Division One clash with Stanground Cardea Sports Development XI.

Aaron Wylie had scored after five minutes and United were level at the break but pulled clear with a three-goals-in-12 minutes burst from Warren Hebblethwaite 2 and Marley Hamilton.

* Spalding United chalked up their first Cambridgeshire Women’s League Division One win of the season, after opening with two draws.

Substitute Constance Onyinha got two goals and Phoebe Richards-Reeves one in a 3-0 victory at Cambridge Rangers.

Cup runs have left the Tulips playing catch up and they have up to five games in hand on their rivals.
