Call to open closed footpath

A councillor has asked for a road and path to be reopened that is currently closed due to the Spalding Western Relief Road.

All of the footpaths around Two Plank Bridge were closed for over three years as the £48m, still closed, northern section of the road was built.

Most of those, including the new bridge is now open for use.

However, the southern part of Blue Gowt Lane remains closed due to the public not being allowed on to the closed new road.

It means a longer walk for those off Blue Gowt Drive to go under the new road bridge.

Coun Ingrid Sheard raised the issue at the most recent meeting of Lincolnshire County Council’s Highways Committee.

“For some reason it’s deemed unsuitable for pedestrians and dog walkers to cross,” she said. “It’s quite an active piece of road. The residents are shouting at me and say they’d like it reopening.

“I’ve been in communication, as has residents, with officers and we’re meeting stumbling blocks due to what we’re being told is legalities.”

Lincolnshire County Council’s head of environment, Chris Miller, responded: “It’s one of those anomalies were ones we find with regards to right of way we have an overlap with our colleagues in Highways.

“I’m sure between us we can work it out.”
