Screen for teens idea to get more young people in to Spalding

A special feature film showing to try and attract more teenagers to Spalding town centre could be put on next year.

Following feedback to the Spalding Town Forum from young people at a previous meeting, members are looking to put on a showing and associated events in the town for it.

It agreed to subsidise the cost of ticket prices for a cinema screening at the South Holland Centre.

“We were looking at talking to the schools and pupils to see what kind of film they’d like us to show,” forum chair Coun Rob Gibson. “I’d like to propose we sponsor the ticket price for the teenagers and have some sort of ‘fuss’ around it, to get a buzz about it.

“It’s to encourage youngsters to use the South Holland Centre, invite them into the town centre and maybe reach out to food outlets and see if they’d do five or 10 per cent off for the students.”

The funding of the ticket prices would come from the town forum’s fund, but have to be agreed by South Holland District Council, the meeting was told.

Coun Elizabeth Sneath said: “I think it’s a great idea.

“We often do it for small children, lets do it so it’s more accepted to do it for older ones.

“We might not be able to fund it to this extent continuously, but maybe we could encourage other sponsors to come forward and, with the town centre closed, we can put something outside.

“Getting together with friends to do something is so important.”

Coun Gibson told the forum that they had pencilled in a January date for it to take place but the South Holland Centre has a problem with its projector and it is currently waiting for parts to fix it.

“They had hoped the parts would be in two weeks but it could be now six to eight weeks, so they can’t guarantee the projector will be available for when we have in mind,” he said. “We’re hopeful to do something in February.”
