Shop local this Christmas is the plea from a Pinchbeck business owner amid rising costs, including a National Insurance hike.
Gary Slator, owner of Birchgrove Garden Centre has warned of the potential loss of unique and valued businesses if action isn’t taken.
“Shopping local isn’t just about keeping businesses afloat; it’s about preserving the personal touch that only independent shops can offer,” said Mr Slator.
“We employ local staff who know the area, understand the needs of our customers, and can help find the perfect product.
“There’s no waiting around for online deliveries, worrying if they’ll arrive in time for Christmas, or dealing with the hassle of returns if something’s broken or not right.”
Independent retailers are facing increased pressure from rising costs.
Last month’s Government budget announcement of National Insurance increases for employers could result in thousands of pounds of additional costs for small businesses like Birchgrove, Mr Slator says.
This is compounded by significant increases in energy prices and other expenses that have already stretched resources to breaking point.
“These challenges make it harder than ever for independent retailers to survive,” Mr Slator explained.
“Without local support, we risk losing the incredible variety of shops that offer unique products and exceptional service.
“Once these businesses are gone, they’re gone for good.”
