After 14 months, A16/A151 roundabout work is complete

Over a year long work on the A151/A16 McDonald’s/Springfields roundabout has been completed, Lincolnshire County Council say.

It follows 14 months of roadworks to make the junction bigger and putting in new entrance and exit lanes.

Its one of six junctions that have had, or are having, work done to them as part of a £20m government ‘Levelling Up’ funding.

Coun Richard Davies, LCC executive member for highways, said: “After fourteen months of hard work, I’m happy to announce that our improvements to the A16/A151 Springfield Roundabout are officially finished, with the upgraded roundabout fully re-opened.

“This major project aims to ease congestion, enhance safety, and future-proof the roundabout for upcoming A16 upgrades.

“By making the roundabout bigger; adding new entry and exit lanes on the A16; and improving entry and exit lanes on the A151, we’re confident these goals have been achieved.

“I know the disruption during the works didn’t make life easy for drivers, residents, or local businesses so I want to give my sincere thanks to everyone for bearing with us throughout the works.

“Traffic management is necessary evil of all roadworks to help keep everyone, including our workforce, safe.

“With Springfield Roundabout back open, we’re now focused on completing our improvements to Pinchbeck Roundabout, just a mile up the A16.”

The county council say 8,000 tonnes of old carriageway, footway and kerbing have been excavated, 28 new street lights installed and ‘nearly half a mile’ of new footway built.

Coun Davies said: “This project has been a very complex piece of engineering to make into a reality. In fact, over 65,000 hours were spent on it since breaking ground last September and it’s involved installing over a half mile of new underground drainage and using over 12,500 tonnes of materials to rebuild the roundabout.”
