School helped charity ring in donations

Pupils from Year Seven of Spalding High School have been supporting a charity’s effort to help families in the Philippines and local residents are also invited to get involved.

The Spalding Rotary Club branch has been collecting ring pulls from cans for several years as part of the multi-national organisation’s Purple Community Fund.
They’re given to women and children who might otherwise be scouring huge rubbish dumps looking for them to turn them in to items they can sell such as jewellery and handbags.
The Year Seven girls designed collecting devices in the High School and collected huge amounts for the appeal.
Trevor Clay, of Spalding Rotary, said: “The High School has been a great help this year in boosting Rotary’s own efforts and has helped the Year Seven girls to learn about recycling and the need to help struggling communities in less fortunate lands across the world to survive.
“This would be a fun and a rewarding project for other schools in Spalding to join in with, whether primary or secondary, and Spalding Rotary would be delighted to receive as many as can be collected.
“Our invaluable friend of Rotary, Andrew Inkley will also gladly allow his clothing shop at 12 Vine Street in The Crescent to be a collecting point for ring-pulls from the Spalding public to help this initiative to have maximum impact.”
l The Spalding Rotary branch is also supporting the president of another club’s charity cycle ride which is coming to the town.
James Slinn, of Bexhill, is looking to raise £2,500 by cycling 2,500 miles during his year in office as part of his Long Ride.
As part of that he and his group are taking on two routes around Spalding.
On Saturday, March 9 he’ll be riding 12 miles from Spalding to Gedney Dyke.
The following day he’ll be joined by Spalding’s Graham Dawson for a 50-mile circular route from Spalding and taking in Crowland, Market Deeping and Bourne.
