LETTER: Good service is so important to shoppers

Further to my usual daily trip into town I have now decided it will be my last. No wonder trade is down.

I visited a jeweller to enable my partner to purchase my Christmas present from them (we have both been customers in the past).

I asked for my finger to be sized (any jeweller does this with pleasure).

The assistant/owner wanted to charge me for this service (refund on purchase!)

This shop has now lost a sale of hundreds of pounds. Next shops will be charging to enter them.

As I shop for England, as my partner says, we are lucky enough to be able to.

As an ex-business woman I always told my staff ‘the customer is king’. No customers – no job.

It would be wonderful to have a smile and friendly word when entering shops in Spalding, but nothing.

It seems they have no idea how important this is to shoppers.

I have also had shops and know customers can be difficult but a smile, helpfulness and understanding usually works.
