Funding for walking sport and counselling

Two funding streams have been approved to help boost mental and physical health in Holbeach.

A special open day is being held on Monday with taster sessions of walking football, walking cricket and other activities.

The Money Care Network alliance of countywide community groups is funding the walking sports.

District and county councillor Tracey Carter secured the funding which aims to support people to live well in their communities.

Making new social connections and improving health are driving the football and cricket, both at Holbeach Hub, which is open to men and women and aimed at the over 50s.

“We are hoping that there will be a lot of interest in both aspects of these projects,” said Coun Carter.
“The bids went in as part of the Holbeach Moving Forward and we were successful for both,” she added.

The football will take place on Tuesdays 10am to 12pm and Wednesday 3pm to 5pm. The cricket, at the same venue, is 10am to noon on Mondays and 3pm to 5pm on Thursdays, also at the Hub. Sessions are free of charge thanks to the funding.

The drop-in counselling sessions will be held on Monday and Tuesday 9.30 to 10.30am and Wednesday and Friday from 3.30 to 4.30pm at the hub. The times are designed to be family-friendly.

These sessions have been funded by CAD to help support residents and signpost a range of services.
Community Asset Development funding is an aspect of mental health transformation strategy of the county council.

Both the walking football and cricket schemes are running with Tonic Health and for more information contact Rob Simpson (pictured above with Coun Carter) on 07916 161218.

The open day will be at the Tonic Health building and will also offer the chance to meet other services and support providers available locally.
