Standing ovation for Great Escape PoW

A sellout audience filled the Corn Exchange at the Market House Long Sutton last week and listened spellbound as 97-year-old Jack “Tiger” Lyon spoke about the three years he spent as a prisoner of war in Germany in the 1940s and particularly about his involvement in what we now call the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III.

Speaking without referring to his notes, Jack spoke for half an hour and took questions from the audience which gave him a standing ovation at the conclusion of his talk.

The event was attended by other former airmen including another local resident who was a PoW at Stalag Luft III.

The night, arranged by Long Sutton and District Civic Society, also included a talk by Squadron Leader (retired) Christa Lawrence, Officer Commanding AWR Holbeach and site manager Andy Hines, on the work of the air weapons range.
