An 84-year-old has proved that if you’re brave enough, you’re never too old to take part in a fundraising craze sweeping across the world.
Jean Sanderson insisted on joining staff being doused with a bucket of water at Age UK Spalding District’s daycare centre in Park Road.
Five staff took part in the ice bucket challenge, then Jean followed with a “n-ice bucket” challenge (thanks to slightly warmer water!)
Jean, of Spalding, said: “I was determined to take part because it’s for charity. I can’t get about very well, but I can do something like that.”
The craze involves people being nominated to have ice cold water thrown over them. If they accept the challenge, they pay £3 to charity; if they don’t, it’s a £10 “fine”.
The fundraiser reached the centre when cleaner Louise Hoy nominated general manager Liz Walmsley, who roped in fellow staff members.
Friday’s fun raised £121 for Alzheimer’s Society.
Jean, who worked for ex-Spalding shops Woolworth’s, Neal’s furnishing shop and International Tea Stores, has been going to the daycare centre daily for seven years.
She said: “They’re lovely carers here – I’m going to carry on coming until I’m 100!”
Gavin Allmand, of Hills Department Store in Spalding, wants to see shops and businesses join together for an ice bucket challenge for local charity/ies.
He suggests that each business pays a minimum sponsorship and encourages more through customers.
