Thumbs up to refit plan for town butcher’s shop

Plans to refit a Spalding butcher’s shop have been given the go ahead – despite objections from the town’s Civic Society.

T Law and Sons has been sold to Simpson Butchers, which wants to carry out a £150,000 refit of the Hall Place shop.

Plans went before South Holland District Council’s planning committee last week when they were passed unanimously.

The new owners want to create a shop front with decorated windows and an automatic sliding door. Counters either side of the shop would serve fresh meat and cooked meat.

The Civic Society objected to the plans as the proposed display area would be less visible. They believe the reduction in window display compromises the vitality and overall retail viability of the town centre.

However, the servery area would also be on display through the window which would show not only the product, but the way in which it is handled and served.

A report to the planning committee concluded: “The proposed window is no less attractive than the existing and is of more traditional design, encapsulating new hygiene methods and need for modern functionality in combination with traditional design.”

The current business, which was started by Tommy Law, has been present in Spalding for more than 100 years and the Hall Place shop was established in 1918.
