Thorogood philosophical as Pinchbeck United are stunned in FA Vase upset

Boss Lewis Thorogood admitted Pinchbeck United slipped on a typical banana skin on Friday night as they woes in FA competitions continued.

The Knights saw their four-game unbeaten run ended by lower-graded Graham Street Prims’ 2-1 win at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field, as they fell at the first hurdle in the FA Vase.

George Lynam put the Uhlsport UCL Division One strugglers 1-0 ahead at the break, before sub Enoch Opayinka jumped off the bench to level for the Knights.

However, Lee Fell headed a winner for the Derbyshire side – meaning Pinchbeck’s miserable record of never having won in an FA competition drags on for another season.

Thorogood, who has seen his side make great improvements in the UCL Premier Division North, felt it was an upset waiting to happen.

“It had all the hallmarks of a cup upset,” admitted the Knights chief. “It was Friday night game against lower level opposition, which everyone expected us to win.

“For me, it was a recipe for disaster. All I can do is credit the opposition, they set up to be hard to beat and so it proved.

“We probably had about 90 per cent of the ball, but didn’t do enough in the final third. Enoch Opayinka wreaked havoc when he came on and the equaliser was deserved.

“But I was disappointed that we didn’t kick on at 1-1. We fell asleep and lost that ethos we’ve had in recent weeks.”

Knights: Smith, Stevens, Gagyi, Worthington, Baldock-Smith, Fixter, Peasgood, Melson, Hebblethwaite, Havard, Neil. Subs used: Knight, Opayinka, Taylor.

Attendance: 87.
