Saturday football: Spalding United beaten at home, Holbeach United exit FA Vase

Cheer was in limited supply for South Holland’s leading football sides over the weekend.

Spalding United suffered a 2-1 Pitching In NPL Midlands Division defeat to Cambridge City and Holbeach United lost 2-0 at Boston Town in the FA Vase on Saturday, while Pinchbeck United were upset 2-1 at home by Graham Streer Prims on Friday night as they too exited the FA Vase.

Starting with the Tulips, all three goals were scored in the final ten minutes as they suffered a first home loss in the league so far this season.

Thomas Hitchcock (81) and Ryan Swift (90) put Cambridge 2-0 to the good at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field, before Jordan Macleod grabbed a consolation in added time.

The loss leaves Gaby Zakuani’s side down in tenth place, although they do have at least one game in hand on four of the sides above them.

Meanwhile, Holbeach’s disappointing start to the season continued as they suffered a second defeat at Boston Town this campaign.

An own goal on the hour and Harry Limb’s late clincher put the Poachers in the next round of the Vase and left the Tigers still searching for a first win this season.

The same fate went Pinchbeck’s way, as they were shocked by lower graded Graham Street Prims at the Sir Halley on Friday night.

George Lynam put the Uhlsport UCL Division One strugglers 1-0 ahead at the break, before sub Enoch Opayinka jumped off the bench to level for the Knights.

However, Lee Fell headed a winner for the Derbyshire side – ending Pinchbeck’s four-game unbeaten run and leaving them still without a win in an FA competition.
