LETTER: System works well for me

I’m not normally a person that would write to the newspapers but I do feel that your lead story in the June 10 edition titled “State of Spalding Tip brings criticism” is totally different to my views of the controls at the Spalding refuse site.
I am a user of the site, going about every two weeks, and as well as taking my green waste, I normally help my daughter and in-laws by also taking theirs.
Yes, of course things have changed, we are in the middle of a pandemic and the changes introduced are a reflection of what is required. I would also say that the Covid controls that the site brought into force are still working well and in fact are better than I find in most of our local supermarkets.
The booking system that is in operation works well for me and by having this I no longer find myself sitting in a line of traffic on a busy road, with heavy vehicles close to the maximum speed limit, coming round a corner close to the entrance, which never felt totally safe.
I see from the report that before the site joined the recycling scheme, 27 per cent of the waste was being recycled and for us that actually use the site, we can clearly see the current figures being displayed, which are normally now in the high 80s.
I’m not sure where Coun Martin Hill gets his information from, but it would be interesting to see from the booking records how many times he has actually used the site compared to my visits, over the last 15 months.
I would like to state that I have no allegiance to the council or the people that work at the tip.
I have always found the people at the West Marsh Road site very helpful and polite and I for one would not like to see this operation close.
I would like to conclude by saying that I don’t think that the new controls at the refuse site have anything to do with an increase in fly tipping.
If you have a person that does fly tip, it is just part of their nature and by opening the centre more will not change anything. Maybe a few hours of community service picking up rubbish might be more effective in stopping them?
