School’s yellow ribbon tribute

A South Holland primary school is awash with yellow after staff, pupils and families adorned the fence with ribbons as part of the National Day of Reflection.

Whaplode Church of England Primary held a minute’s silence last Tuesday when the nation looked back at a year since the outbreak of a pandemic.

All the children currently in school and members of the adjoining Acorn Nursery tied ribbons to the school fence.

Baskets with ribbons inside were also put on the fence so families and members of the wider community could join.

“Everybody within the school community has experienced different things because of COVID-19. Some are dealing with bereavement and loss and it has been a tough year for many people. We wanted to do a positive thing and took the time to consider that not all the changes have been negative,” said head of school Emma Adie.

The school will welcome back its Year 2 and Year 6 classes after the Easter break and is also fundraising for new swimming pool changing rooms. A variety of events since Christmas, including a hedgehog hunt, raffle and Christmas card sales all helped raise more than £2,000 since December.
