Hockey clubs’ league season is terminated

Spalding and Long Sutton Hockey Clubs have had their league seasons officially terminated – but there may be an opportunity for end of campaign competitions.

The East League made the announcement last week that the league season would be terminated.

Secretary Neil Liversedge said: “The feedback we have had from both clubs and senior members from clubs is that there is an appetite to play hockey but for clubs and players not to be tied to a perceived tightness that a league fixture may bring.

“The point was also made that post-Easter availability of players does reduce.

“The East League Management Committee encourages clubs, teams and players to take every opportunity to get out on the pitch and play hockey, if that means using some of the league fixtures that have not been played, being played as friendlies so be it, but we also recognise that clubs may take the opportunity to run fun club-specific activities to suit their membership.

“The 2020/21 season has been enormously difficult and we thank all clubs and their administrators for their open ears, opinion and advice, where that advice has been constructive.”

Spalding Hockey Club has expressed interest in still playing games.

The club posted on Facebook: “Spring is coming and so is our return to hockey.

“We are working with all the necessary committees to get back to playing as soon as we can, so watch this space.”

Spalding Men’s 1st XI were fifth in the Premier B division with the Ladies’ 1st XI 11th in 2NW division when the final action of the season took place last October.

After four wins and two draws from their six games, Long Sutton Men’s 1st were second in the table and could still play at a higher level next year with Hockey England looking at a possible nationwide reorganisation.
Sutton’s Ladies’ 1st XI were 10th in division 2NW.
