A family who have raised over £2,000 for charity by walking more than 100 miles in February have now taken up wombling.
Teresa Thorpe (54), of Weston, and daughter Kimberley Waite, accompanied by three-year-old son Evan, attempted to walk and run 56 miles in the month to raise money for Cancer Research UK as part of Teresa’s bid to get fit again after chemotherapy.
They did nearly double the mileage in the end, 102 miles in total and raised a combined £2,095.
But Teresa, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in November, decided she couldn’t stay still for long after completing her challenge.
And after spotting so much litter around her walks, herself and Kimberley have joined the Wombles of Spalding Common group and are regularly going out and picking up litter, particularly between Baytree and McDonald’s.
“After the run we did say we’d spend some time doing some bits at home we might have neglected,” said Teresa. “But after a few days I wanted to get out again.
“We noticed how much litter there was so we’ve decided to go wombling. It’s kept me busy.”
On the run Teresa said: “The response we’ve had has been phenomenal.
“After being in the paper we had even more people saying hello and pipping us. I want to say a huge thank you to everybody who donated and supported us. I couldn’t believe the amount we raised when we totalled it up.”
