This was the scene at the war memorial in All Saints’ churchyard in Holbeach on Monday.

Children joined members of the Holbeach branch of the Royal British Legion and other adults for Lights Out, a national commemoration of the anniversary of the start of World War One.

Roger Green, honorary secretary of the branch, said: “A group of people reaching 35 at times gathered for a candlelight vigil of contemplation and reflection of the events yet to come, culminating in the extinguishing of the candles to echo the words of Sir Edward Grey – ‘The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime’.”

Residents across the district joined in too, with homes being lit only by candles for an hour from 10pm.
South Holland District Council’s headquarters in Priory Road, Spalding, also took part.
