Residents across South Holland are being asked to switch off their lights as part of a poignant commemoration.
Lights Out is a UK-wide campaign to commemorate the outbreak of the First World War and South Holland District Council is supporting the initiative.
The event invites everyone to turn off their lights from 10pm to 11pm on Monday – 100 years to the day that Britain declared war on Germany.
Residents are asked to leave on a single light or candle for this shared moment of reflection.
Coun Nick Worth, portfolio holder for community, said: “This will be a special moment for the people of South Holland to actively take part in this national event and remember the many people from the district who gave their lives in World War One who enabled us to have the freedom we enjoy today.
“We will be playing our part in the event with staff switching off lights at the South Holland Centre while a single light will be left on at the council’s offices in Priory Road, Spalding.”

Holbeach branch of the Royal British Legion will be marking Lights Out on Monday between 10pm and 11pm.
The event will be a candlelight vigil for contemplation and reflection at the war memorial in All Saints’ Churchyard on High Street, Holbeach.
Anyone wishing to join branch members will be very welcome, and are asked to be in position by 9.55pm.
Members are reminded that there will be no branch meeting in August, with the next one being on September 17.
