It is not unusual to read letters of support for our MP Sir John Hayes.
I have always been impressed by how well his local supporters/ Conservative Party members organise themselves in this regard. I have no truck with that but do find it a bit ‘over the top at times’. Indeed, I am happy to accept that Sir John is a hardworking and conscientious MP.
In my communications with him he has always responded promptly and courteously, though I doubt we would agree on very many policy issues.
This is surprising since we both originate from South London with Trade Unions in our family history, but that is another letter!
However, the letter submitted by ‘Imogen Sinclair, London’ published on August 6 did puzzle me.
Just who is Imogen Sinclair of London, what connection does she have to Sir John and what prompted her to write in his support?
It would be nice to get some clarity given that she is trying to influence opinion in a constituency of which she is not a member.
Some questions for starters but your readers may well have additional questions of their own:
- Is Imogen Sinclair a journalist, if so for which publication?
- Is Imogen Sinclair a member of staff at The House of Commons? If so she should remain impartial.
- Is Imogen Sinclair a member of Sir John’s staff in London? In which case we deserve to know.
- Is Imogen Sinclair a member of staff at Conservative Head Office? Again, we deserve to know.
- Does Imogen Sinclair have links to any of Sir John’s business acquaintances? In which case we should be told, particularly if they are making donations to The Conservative Party in general or Sir John’s office in particular.
- What prompted Imogen Sinclair to write in support of Sir John?
On the substance of Imogen Sinclair’s letter I would simply seek clarification on how Sir John complied with the National ‘lockdown’ provisions whilst apparently commuting to and from London ‘every week’.
