Spalding and District Billiards League leaders Sutton suffer Holbeach humbling

Table-toppers Long Sutton suffered a rare defeat in Spalding and District Billiards League on Monday night.

The long-term leaders slipped up 5-2 at fourth-placed Holbeach C, who are now 11.5 points off top spot with a game in hand.

A typical spree of breaks from Mick Cooper (O150) – who pocketed 45, 44 and 40 – wasn’t enough for Sutton, with Colin Dodd (R70) and Ben Harding (R80) winning frames for hosts Holbeach.

That allowed second-placed Donington to shave two points off the Sutton lead with a narrow 4-3 triumph at Pyramid B.

Frame victories from Ben Wrigglesworth (R60) and Matt Turner (R50) got the job done for them, but Darrell Read’s (R50) fine victory in the first frame ensured that they only collected fourpoints.

Bourne ace Martin O’Connor (scr) made a 20 break in that clash, too.

Sutton’s lead over Donington is now 7.5 points.

Fellow high-fliers Consti B were also defeated as they came up against an inspired Gosberton A side.

Despite the best efforts of cue ace Mick Johnson (O180), who racked up breaks of 49, 46 and 30, Consti were handed a 5-2 reverse.

Norman Gookey (R70) and David Haresign (R40) picked up the frame wins for hosts Gosberton.

Meanwhile, Rob Childs (O230) made the best break of the week as his Crowland B side beat Consti C 5-2.

Childs amassed a cool 54, as well as breaks of 42 and 37, but was still beaten by John Bellerby (R90).
