Young skaters flip tricks at Spalding extreme sports festival

The extreme sports festival Skate & BMX Jam returned to Spalding Skate Park for a day of tricks and tips, as well as to spread a message of respect for the facility.

Coun Pete Williams organised the event, which featured displays by extreme sports display group Team Extreme.

Team Extreme offer skateboard, scooter and BMX coaching for newcomers or rookies honing their skills.

The skatepark was opened in 2010 and sees regular use. However, a common problem is litter left at the facility.

“We all felt concerned the area was becoming a daily eyesore with the discarded rubbish but realised all we needed to do is use it as it should be used,” said Tulip Events Management’s Jan Whitbourn.

“Team Extreme told the young people, ‘This is your skate park, look after it and treat it with respect’.”

Coun Williams said he was extremely pleased with the high turnout of supporters and could tell the youngsters watching the pro athletes were inspired.

Next year’s event is already in the works, with Team Extreme booked to return on Sunday, August 12, 2018.

The day will feature fairground rides, stalls, ice cream and hot dog stands.
