Young gun Ellis close to club record at Spalding Cycling Club’s ten-mile opener

Ever-improving youngster Matt Ellis came within a whisker of shattering a Spalding Cycling Club record last Tuesday night.

The club’s ten mile time trial series got under way on a damp but not too breezy night – with Ellis taking top spot in 22.04mins.

He was four seconds off breaking the club youth record, set by Andrew Spencer in 1997.

Josh Wallis took second in 22.22mins, pushing Neil Palmer into third – his lowest spot for some years – by a solitary second. Keiran Buffham managed a personal best (PB) of 23.21mins to take fourth.

Other times: Ben Moore 23.42mins; Frazer Wallis 24.16; Adam Ellis 24.21; Ed Holliday 25.35; Mark Hills 25.38; Chris Bettinson 25.54; Thomas Wright 26.24; Simon Wright 26.38; James Bramma 27.21; Nigel Howard 28.26; Derek Chamberlain 30.06; Brian Johnson 31.27; Gary Hignett 32.12; Katie Wright 36.15; Earl Taylor (Velo One) 23.26.

  • Spalding CC’s 18 mile Hilly Time Trial (held on the A151 between Edenham and Colsterworth) results: 3rd Neil Palmer 42.24mins; 7th Tim Lister 43.28; 11th Adam Ellis 45.29; 15th Frazer Wallis 46.08; 25th Mark Hills 49.27; 27th Ed Holliday 51.05; 28th Simon Wright 51.51; 29th Tilly Gurney 52.29mins; 30th James Bramma 52.47; 31st Chris Bettinson 53.39; 9th Chris Ward (Team Swift) 43.57.
  • Spalding CC’s Barry Drew took part in the Veteran’s Time Trial Association’s 25-mile event on Saturday.

Racing two laps on a course of two halves, a fairly flat first followed by an undulating second into a breeze on the A1303/A134 at Stretchworth Newmarket, saw him finish in what Drew felt was a very disappointing 1.17.38hrs.

  • Three club riders took part in the East Midlands Road Race League for category 2/3/4 riders at Witham-on-the-Hill. In a field of approximately 80, a crash on lap two put an end to Keiran

Buffham’s ride. Josh Wallis, riding for the Active Edge RT team, came 11th and Matt Ellis (Soenens Boom) was 14th.

  • Spalding’s Tilly Gurney raced even further afield, representing her University in the British University and College Sport National 22 mile Team Time Trials.
