Years roll back for Land Girl Bun

A former Land Army girl celebrated VE Day in style in Spalding.

Bun Smith (96) was delighted to mark the special anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Now a resident at Spalding’s Cedar Falls Care Home, Bun was even happier when she heard that activities coordinater Sharon Kendall was dressing in honour of the day.

The Land Army veteran, who served in Donington, lent her a scarf, cardigan and the two medals she was awarded for her wartime work.

“I arrived on May 23, 1943 and lived at Swineshead hostel with 40 girls,” she said.

“The farm I worked on, Park Farm, belonged to John Henry Casee Wells. We had a great time.

“The paratroopers were there before they went to Arnhem (Netherlands) and two years ago I went to a big reunion in Donington.

“The oldest para was there, he was 100 last March and lives at the Royal Hospital in Chelsea.”

Sharon said: “It was a privilege to wear Bun’s medals and the items she so kindly lent me.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who fought and worked so tirelessly towards VE Day,” she added.
