Yacht club sails in to help

Members of Welland Yacht Club took to their boats to help add new plants to the floating beds in Spalding town centre.

Working with the East Mercia Rivers Trust (EMRT), they helped fill in gaps ahead of the spring.

“These plants provide habitat and food for small species and birds, help improve water quality, absorb carbon and work with all the other features already along the top of the riverbank to make it a nice place to be,” said Sam Valman, Welland Project Manager at the EMRT.

He added that yacht club had ‘moved very quickly to volunteer and help us.’

Commodore Sarah Prior said: “We were pleased to be assisting in something that benefits the river and improves the town.

“This is our closed season, with sailing starting again at the beginning of April, so it was good to give the rescue boats a run.”
