Work to get waste collections right

Waste collection crews and residents are still learning their new routes, a councillor has said.

Last week South Holland District Council began new programmes of waste collections.
The Voice has been contacted by several members of the public who hadn’t had their waste collected on the day they thought it would.
But Coun Jack Tyrrell, the authority’s portfolio holder for environmental services said it was because the staff carrying out the waste collections were learning new routes, and also residents were not putting rubbish out on the correct day due to the changes.
Coun Tyrrell had previously said there had been ‘teething problems’ with the scheme and asked residents to bear with the council as it begins the new programme of collections.
In response to the first full week of the roll out, he said: “On Monday October 2, the council implemented refuse and recycling day changes to more than 45,000 households across the district, most of our collections went as expected with minimal issues.”
“However, last week in particular we expected to see some disruption as a result of crews and residents learning their new routes and days to present their waste in the first week.
“In some cases day changes resulted in their new waste collections being days after old collection day, extra waste was then presented and our crews were unable to finish the routes, which meant they had to catch up the following day instead.
“We would like to encourage our residents to keep an eye on our social media channels for updates on their waste collections and thank our residents for their understanding and support during this time of change.”
