Work is under way on town’s traffic lights around bridge

Traffic lights in the centre of Spalding should be working as normal again by the end of this week.

There have been temporary lights on the four-way junction at the town’s High Bridge.

But they have not been phased in the same way as the permanent lights, and traffic has regularly been brought to a standstill approaching from Bridge Street, High Street, Church Street and Churchgate.

The traffic has been getting gridlocked for two weeks after the control box was damaged by a car hitting the controller unit on June 1.

The county council had warned earlier this week that repairs would take longer than had been anticipated due to the need for a structural survey on the wall that the unit was fixed to.

But on Tuesday the county council agreed it would start work and hoped to have the lights operating properly by the end of this week.

Jonathan Evans, head of highways, said: “We have decided to pre-empt the structural survey and crack on with replacing the signal equipment because we can’t have these delays continuing while we wait for the owner of the building to resolve the wall issues.

“We are going in today to start installing the new controller and to replace all of the signal heads because these will operate on a different voltage on the new control system. We are hopeful that this will all be complete by the end of the week.

“We have been in contact with the owner of the building, but we do feel like we can’t wait any longer,” he said.

Previously the highways department had said that without knowing the extent of the damage to the adjacent wall, it couldn’t safely remove the damaged box.

The spokesman warned repairs would take ‘considerably longer’ because of the circumstances.

“If the building owner needs us to removed the new controller to facilitate the wall repair, we will work with them to minimise disruption and plan the future of the works accordingly. If this were to happen, we will look to recover the additional costs associated with this revisit from the party that caused the original damage,” added Mr Evans.
