Wonderful Woodhead shines in Sutton success

Three second-half goals fired Long Sutton ladies’ 1st to another eye-catching victory on Saturday.

They made it two wins from as many East Women’s League Division 2NW games by seeing off St Neots 1st 3-0 and are sitting pretty in second place.

After a goalless first period, player-of-the-match Leanne Woodhead rifled a super strike into the corner to break the deadlock.

Woodhead then picked out Robyn Gribble to slot home her second, before Jess Hudson crossed for Woodhead to bag her second and seal the points.

In the same division, Spalding Poachers 1st lost a ten-goal thriller at Alford 1st 6-4.

All looked to be going smoothly for the Poachers when Tori Needham, Holly Hetherington and for Kelly Tuplin put them 3-0 up. Alford pulled one back before the break, but when Karen Timby finished off a top team move they were cruising at 4-1.

From there, things went badly wrong and five unanswered goals left them pointless.

In Division 3NW (N), Spalding Poachers 3rd were also involved in a cracker as they lost 3-2 at Woodhall Spa 1st.

Playing on a 3G football pitch, Evie Maltby and Sam Foston scored to ensure it was 2-2 at half time. Although they had 18 shots in the second half, Spalding shipped one more goal to emerge pointless.

In the same division, Long Sutton ladies’ 2nd battled out a 3-3 draw with Lincoln ladies’ 2nd.

Having fallen behind, Millie Lamming levelled for Sutton at the interval.

Jeorgia Carr and Amber Jones then put Sutton 3-1 ahead, only for two short corners to leave the scores level.
