Andy Prior was victorious in two of the three races at Welland Yacht Club on Sunday.
He picked up victories in the second round of the Morning Points Series and in race three of the Munson Cup, while Neal Tack prevailed in race four of the same competition to finish off the day of racing.
Four of the newer juniors were among a field of ten for the Morning Points Series race. There was a little confusion at the start with several boats convinced they were over the line turning back for a penalty – although no one was actually called back by the race officer.
This left Geri van Haren (Phantom) in open water to start pulling out a lead as the fleet rounded the first mark and headed up river.
Followed by Ros Nickols (Europe), Prior (Laser), Will Cook and crew Michael (Scorpion), and Martin Cook (Solo). On the run back from the top mark, Prior passed Nickols and was making gains on van Haren.
But, with the lead five boats all being of differing classes, position on the water would bear no resemblance to the actual result. The podium, after handicaps were applied, saw Prior win from Nickols, with van Haren third.
Next up, 11 boats made the start of the third Munson Cup meet. Prior made a well-judged run and got a flying start – which he would need to negate his personal handicap.
A couple of gusts nearly caught a few of the juniors, but they managed to avoid an early bath.
Once again Prior took top spot ahead of van Haren, with Nickols third.
The final race of the day saw a slight change in course to allow the juniors to do only half the course and get a lap time. The fleet had dropped back to ten, with Tack making the most of it and taking the early lead in one of the club’s newly acquired Lasers.
There was also a tight finish for juniors Freya Willerton and Christopher Seaborn, with Willerton just managing to edge it.
Prior held first place but was knocked back to third under handicap, with Tack taking the win and Gail Follington second.
