Welland Yacht Club duo Bell and Follington celebrate series successes

Tom Bell and Gail Follington both clinched titles as Welland Yacht Club’s Sunday Points series and Personal Handicap series reached a climax on Sunday.

The first race of the day was to determine the winner of the Sunday Points series.

With a strong breeze blowing, all boats got away – but it wasn’t too long before a few got caught by the gusts and capsizes were the order of the day, keeping the safety boat busy.

Despite some closely fought sailing for position on the water between Martin Cook, Brian Cobb and Gerri van Haren.

Once handicaps had been applied, Cobb would take the win from van Haren, with Follington third and Cook fourth.

Although he was on safety boat duty this week, it was Bell who secured overall success in the series.

The afternoon saw races five and six of the Personal Handicap series.

With the wind increasing to a level beyond the youngest competitor, the fleet was now joined by Andy Dodson to maintain the numbers at six.

This time Follington would take the win from Dodson, with Cook third and Cobb fourth

The final race of the day boasted a fleet of just three.

With Cobb and Cook battling for victory, Dobson was finding the conditions challenging and was eventually forced to retire.

Cook eventually secured the win from Cobb, but Follington’s earlier win was enough for her to take overall honours in the series.
