Weeks of road closures around Spalding and Deeping St Nicholas for rail upgrade

The next phase of the £280million project to upgrade the rail route running through Spalding is under way.

Road users have been warned to expect disruption as roads close to enable improvements to signalling and level crossings between Spalding and Werrington.

Two of the busiest routes in Spalding – Winsover Road and Hawthorn Bank – will be subject to closures. The most recent phase of the project led to major traffic tailbacks due to work in Park Road and Woolram Wygate.

The Great Northern Great Eastern (GNGE) line project – on the route between Peterborough and Doncaster via Lincoln – aims to relieve pressure on the East Coast Main Line. It will enable more passenger and freight trains to operate on the GNGE line.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “The GNGE line is an important route for both freight and passenger trains. Demand for rail services continues to grow and the upgrade of this line is an important project to help meet that demand.
“In just 11 days our engineers will install modern signalling which will help to allow for future increases in services as well as improving reliability. At the same time, ten level crossings will be upgraded with the latest technology.
“This is an essential element of our continuing investment in Britain’s railway.
“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience to passengers during this time, and thank the local community for their support.”

There will be no train service between Spalding and Peterborough (in either direction) from 9pm on October 22 to 7am on November 3.
East Midlands Trains will run replacement buses.

The public can find out more at Network Rail drop-in events at Deeping St Nicholas Primary School on Saturday (10am-2pm) and at Spalding’s Red Lion Quarter on Monday (4pm-8pm) and Tuesday (10am-2pm).
