A public meeting has been called in Gedney Hill to discuss road closures by Anglian Water during the annual harvest.
The company is carrying out a £4.2m upgrade of 11 miles of water pipes in a scheme which will see rolling road closures.
The area had recorded 40 burst pipes in just five years and new mains are required to ensure a reliable service.
Work started in April and is due to continue into the autumn – but a phase of road closures and limited access comes at a time the farming community needs to access land.
Laura Eldridge, South Holland District Council member for the ward, says further discussion is needed.
“Residents, farmers and local businesses have contacted me with concerns relating to the proposed road closures which, while planned for the school holidays, will impact on one of their busiest times of year,” she said.
“The plans are for North Road, Gedney Hill, to be closed from August 3 to September 1, during the school holidays, which also coincides with the harvest season when large farm machinery will need access to fields, as well as being the busiest time of the year for the Pantry at Gedney Hill, Springfield Farm Campsite, North View Lakes and Gedney Golf Club to name but a few, causing concern for access and loss of business.”
The meeting has been arranged on Monday, June 29 at 6.30pm at Gedney Hill Memorial Hall.
Among those attending will be a customer experience specialist from Anglian Water, the project engineer and a member of the site team.
“The East of England is the driest part of the country and also one of the fastest growing, with more than 700,000 new residents expected in the next 20 years.
“New infrastructure like this is needed to make sure there’s enough water to go round for the future. Providing everything goes smoothly, the £4.2m upgrade will be completed by spring next year,” said a company spokesman.
