Warren Free’s death was the second tragedy to hit his close-knit family.
In 2007, seven years before Warren died, his brother Steven died after an altercation in a pub.
Living in Reading at the time, Steven (34) was attacked by another man in a bar who accused him of “jumping the queue”.
Steven was thrown backwards and hit his head on the floor as he fell.
An ambulance was called, but, as there was no blood or obvious injury, Steven refused medical treatment.
Over the next two weeks, Steven carried on with his life, still refusing to seek medical treatment despite recurrent headaches and other symptoms.
Dad Bob said: “Two weeks after he hit his head he went into a coma and five days later he died.
“At the inquest they said the injury could have been made worse by a previous serious head injury he suffered in a cycling accident when he was 18 and that if he had sought treatment during that two weeks he may have survived.”
The brothers’ mum Stephanie, who described Warren and Steven as the “terrible twins” said: “When we got the call about Warren it was like history repeating itself.
“We couldn’t believe it was happening again – to lose another son to a head injury after being attacked and to go through a murder trial only for them to get off. It has been really hard to deal with.”
